Our Humble Beginnings

Lao Sin Kian Choon’s story is woven into the fabric of family, resilience, and the vibrant flavors of Singapore. Founded decades ago by our grandparents as a modest provision shop in Red Hill, we started with simple goods and big dreams. Little did we know that a twist of fate would transform our destiny—one mango at a time.

The Mango That Started It All

In the 1980s, our founder Mr. Mike (affectionately nicknamed “Mr. Meat Ball” or Rou Wan / MAYI by locals) stepped in to help a close friend—an importer struggling to sell surplus mangoes. Setting up a stall in front of a bustling school, his sweet, juicy mangoes drew crowds so large they spilled onto the streets! When the school asked him to move, Mr. Mike faced a challenge: boxes of unsold mangoes and a determination to succeed.

He brought the mangoes back to his father’s provision shop at Red Hill MRT. To everyone’s surprise, the fruit sold out—day after day. Word spread like wildfire. Customers returned, not just for mangoes, but asking, “What else do you have?”

From Provision Shop to Fruit Pioneers

As demand grew, fruits took center stage. What began as a side venture soon outshone the original provision business. By the late 1980s, Mr. Mike and his father made a bold decision: to dedicate themselves fully to fresh fruits, vegetables, and—eventually—Singapore’s beloved king of fruits, durian.

In 2002, government redevelopment reshaped Red Hill, and we relocated to Tiong Bahru MRT. For 30 years, we built loyal relationships with customers who cherished our quality and honesty. In 2017, we embraced our roots and heritage, rebranding as “Lao” (老) Sin Kian Choon—a tribute to our journey and the community that raised us.
